The operating model
What we mean by operating model
The operating model is how an organisation makes decisions, coordinates people and produces results. It is not an org chart: it is a working mechanism.
“A clear organisational structure is not a chart: it is a working mechanism.”
A clear operating model speeds up decisions, reduces dependence on individuals and makes growth more sustainable. It rests on four elements that hold together:
Roles & skills
Who does what, with which capabilities required and which growth paths.
Decision and operating processes
Who decides what, by which criteria, and what happens when a decision has to be escalated.
Organisation
The structure that enables speed, reduces dependence on individuals, and makes coordination and accountability easier.
